What is clearcutting?
Clearcutting is the act of cutting down every single tree in a given area. Unlike selection cutting, where loggers will go into the forest and pick out certain trees to be cut down(usually mature trees), clearcutting cuts down every tree regardless of age. This means that not only mature trees are cut down, but saplings are cut down as well. Any scrub or brush that remains within the given area is usually burnt. The clearcut area can range from very small to many miles, and is often visible from the air, along with the logging roads that are used to access it.
